ZoeDepth (2023)

ZoeDepth (2023)
Analytical processing through spatial decomposition. It reveals the guiding lines and tensions that articulate the geometric regime of the image: what is near, what is far, and how many meters away.
The resulting vectors produce a topographic landscape.
The ZoeDepth model (2023) is a neural network trained on images; what it returns depends on that training. It transforms the photograph into a depth map, in which the value of each pixel represents the estimated distance (in meters) between that point and the camera.
According to its authors, it was designed for computer vision and robotics applications, such as mapping.
The metric data corpus combines two main sources. On the one hand, interiors recorded in three cities with Kinect depth sensors; on the other, road environments —streets, rural areas and highways— around the German city of Karlsruhe, surveyed with a mobile laser scanner mounted on a station wagon.
Over the valley of the Piedras Blancas Glacier, the model assigned the entire image, from the foreground to the summits, distances between 6.3 and 34.6 meters. The script draws them as five contour lines, from 8.9 to 31.5 meters.
